Intelligent video analysis
Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition techniques are developed and applied to video analysis in order to automatically obtain descriptions of contents that can be used later for organization and retrieval from digital video archives. Video OCR and face detection algorithms allow us to obtain textual annotations directly from video images. Other applications covered by our research group include content-based image and video retrieval, and automatic video structuring.

Interoperability
All products developed by Visual Century have used XML in order to allow for easy integration and interoperability, thus foreseeing the use of MPEG-7 as a multimedia content description standard. Intelligent video analysis will allow us to automatically obtain partial MPEG-7 descriptions. We are also working on new ways of taking the most out of new standards for interoperability like MPEG-21 and MXF.

User-centered interfaces
New ways of interaction between the user and multimedia systems will be required in order to take full advantage of its capabilities. Tools like the Visual Context Line enhance user experience and improve the usability of the system.

Projects

Video OCR
The requirements of optical character recognition in video images are very different from classical document-oriented OCR. The low resolution of the images turns it into a very complex problem. Video OCR allows us to automatically obtain textual annotations about contents from superimposed text.

Analysis of MPEG coded streams
Direct analysis of MPEG coded streams will speed up video analysis processes. Besides, MPEG streams contain pre-computed information about the images that can be directly used to analyze contents. Particularly, DCT coefficients and motion estimates can be helpful in many Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition applications.

Retrieval from large image and video databases
Efficient indexing and research schemes to facilitate retrieval from large scale image or video repositories. Fast image and video indexing techniques must be developed to retrieve the most similar items from a repository with hundreds of thousands of elements.
